RATIONALE & CRITERIA

  • Rationale, mainly: based on IDTC policy (i.e., please see Lille summer schools 2015, 2017 and IDTC website), we are expecting to receive submissions related to reflections on methods and modelling in teaching sciences, theoretical and practices. The historiographical, historical, philosophical analyses standpoint are very encouraged and welcomes. This special issue is strictly connected to IDTC, but everyone is wellcome. We thank very much Transversal's editors for the opportunity.

  • Criteria: all submitted papers, which meet the criteria of originality and quality, will be peer–reviewed for the publication. The papers are expected to be revised (in the contents, editing and English) prior to submission to this Transversal Special Issue.
  • The papers not adequately written according to Transversal guidelines, even if its abstract-proposal was regularly accepted, then they can be finally rejected by editors.

CFP: Society for the Metaphysics of Science

The Society for the Metaphysics of Science (SMS) will be holding its fourth annual conference 22–24 August 2018 at The University of Milan, Italy.

Our keynote speaker will be

Alexander Bird (Bristol & Kings)

In addition, Alastair Wilson (Birmingham) will deliver a presidential address.

All other sessions will comprise submitted papers.

As well as various presentations, the conference will also feature an organizational meeting of the Society which will elect officers, continue to make various policies, plan future conferences, etc. Both those interested in presenting papers and/or participating in the Society are invited to the conference.

At the conference, presentations will be 30 minutes, with a 10 minutes comment, 5 min reply, and 15 minutes for Q&A.  Submissions should be on a topic in the metaphysics of science broadly construed, of no more than 4,500 words and should include an abstract of ~150 words and a word count.  All papers must employ gender-neutral language and be prepared for blind review.

At most one contributed paper on which you are the presenting author can be submitted. No one will be permitted to present more than once at SMS 2018. A scholar may appear as co-author on more than one paper or symposium talk, but may present at SMS 2018 only once.

The submission deadline is 2 February 2018.  Notifications of acceptance will be delivered by 2 April 2018.  Selected speakers should confirm their participation before 4 May 2018.

The conference will have a $75 registration fee for faculty and post-docs, $10 for graduate students, $1 for emeritus faculty.

4S Call for Papers, Closed Panels, Posters and Making and Doing Presentations

Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) annual conference

Papers

Single paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words. They should include the paper’s main arguments, methods, and contributions to STS. We strongly encourage you to submit your paper abstract to an open panel. You can contact open panel organisers directly to seek advice about the fit of your paper. Be aware that in some cases organisers will be happy to change panel proposals to accommodate your paper. When submitting papers, in addition to designating one or more topical Research Areas using the drop-down menu, please list up to five keywords to help the program organizers evaluate and assign your paper.

Closed Panels

Each closed panel proposal should contain a summary and rationale of up to 250 words, including a brief discussion of its contribution to STS. A panel proposal must contain a minimum of three paper abstracts conforming to the criteria above and may contain up to five, plus a discussant. If the proposal contains fewer than five papers, the Program Committee may assign additional papers to your panel to optimize scheduling and participation. We encourage closed panel organiser to include people from diverse regions, in keeping with the conference theme. 

Posters

4sSydney will be offering poster sessions. Poster abstracts should be 250 words. Accepted posters should be printed, laminated and brought to Sydney. Posters will be displayed at the meeting and authors will be available at advertised times to speak to their posters. For those unfamiliar with poster sessions, they promote small group and one-on-one interactions with your work that can potentially be more rewarding than panel presentations. They can also facilitate translated and multilingual content. Your poster will also be viewed and read at other times in the meeting, increasing the visibility of your work. Poster exhibit spaces also provide a quieter space for interactions for jetlagged or overwhelmed participants. 

Making and Doing Session

In addition to paper, session and poster submissions, 4S invites proposed presentations for the ‘STS Making and Doing’ event. Participation in the Making and Doing event does not count toward limits on conference participation described elsewhere. The STS Making and Doing Program aims at encouraging 4S members to share scholarly practices of participation, engagement, and intervention in their fields of study. It highlights scholarly practices for producing and expressing STS knowledge and expertise that extend beyond the academic paper or book. By increasing the extent to which 4S members learn from one another about practices they have developed and enacted, the initiative seeks to improve the effectiveness and influence of STS scholarship beyond the field and/or to expand the modes of STS knowledge production. Judging for the STS Making and Doing Award takes place during the meeting. This award formally acknowledges and celebrates distinctive achievements in practices of STS making and doing. It recognizes 4S members who have demonstrated scholarly excellence in formulating, enacting, and sharing theoretically-informed practices of participation, engagement, and intervention in their fields.

CFP: Asian Society of the History of Medicine/History of Medicine in Southeast Asia

The Asian Society of the History of Medicine (9th meeting)

HOMSEA (History of Medicine in Southeast Asia)

to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, June 27–30, 2018

Theme:  Colonial Medicine after Decolonisation:  Continuity, Transition, and Change

Guidelines for Submission: Submissions on all topics related to the history of medicine in Asia are welcome; submissions related to the conference theme are especially encouraged.

Participants can submit full panels (2, 3, or 4 papers) as well as individual papers. Paper proposals (title, author, and an abstract in English of no more than 200 words) and a 1-page curriculum vitae or panel proposals (a panel proposing of no more than 200 words with abstracts and 1-page CVs of all participants) should be sent by electronic mail to Dr. James Dunk (james.dunk@sydney.edu.au). The program committee reserves the right to suggest changes and revisions to abstracts and panel proposals.

Deadline for submission: 1 February 2018

Notification of acceptance will be given by 1 March 2018.

Science Dialogue course in December

Members may be interested in the following course at ANU in December.

What?  Science Dialogue – Theory and Practice (SCOM 3030/6030)

When?  from 27 Nov 2017, intensive classes 4-8 December, online and assessment continue until February

Where? CPAS, ANU

Science Dialogue is an intensive, one-week course that explores structured conversations about science & technology decision-making. It teaches the practices of dialogue and deliberation using various techniques throughout the course, and the skills of planning, designing and running science dialogue. It can be taken as an undergrad or Masters elective, or as a professional short course.

Science Dialogue is intended for practitioners responsible for designing and facilitating conversations about science & technology, for scientists wanting to improve their communication skills, and for decision-makers seeking to better engage publics and stakeholders in scientific decisions.
