Call for papers, panel and workshop proposals

NB: Deadline extended to Friday 16 August 2019

The 2019 AAHPSSS conference will be held from 13–15 November at the Victoria University of Wellington in Aotearoa New Zealand. This is the first time in many years that the conference will be held in NZ, and we are hoping that Australian delegates will make the effort to cross the Tasman for what will be an exciting and stimulating event!

Paper, panel and workshop proposals are invited from members and non-members, and can be on any theme related to the broad remit of the Association, as follows:

• history, philosophy, sociology & anthropology of the sciences broadly construed
• indigenous knowledge systems
• science communication
• science policy and regulation
• science in society and culture

Please note that people who have already submitted paper and panel proposals via the AAHPSSS website do not have to resubmit according to the guidelines below.

PAPER, PANEL AND WORKSHOP STRUCTURE AND LENGTH

Please note that paper and panel sessions will be 90 minutes long, and should consist of no more than three or four papers running at 15 to 20 minutes per paper, allowing for 30 minutes of questions and audience feedback.

Workshop proposals should assume a three-hour timeframe.

Submission Requirements for Paper Proposals

Proposals for paper presentations must include for each presenter:

1. a one-page abstract (maximum 500 words)
2. a one-page short CV with current contact information (maximum 300 words)

These two elements should be combined into one pdf file with numbered pages. Please name this file with your last name and the words "paper proposal," e.g., "smith_paper_proposal.pdf ".

Submission Requirements for Traditional Session Proposals (3–4 papers)

Proposals for complete sessions must include:

1. A description of the session's theme of one page (maximum 500 words)
2. A one-page list of the presenters' names, paper titles, and a brief description of how each paper will contribute to the overall theme (maximum 300 words)
3. For each presenter: a one-page abstract (maximum 500 words) and a one-page short CV with current contact information (maximum 300 words each)
4. A one page CV for the commentator/chair (if any) and session organizer, including the session organizer's current contact information (maximum 300 words each)

The session organizer should combine these four elements into one pdf file with numbered pages. Please name this file with your last name and the words "panel proposal," e.g., "smith_panel_proposal.pdf".

Submission Requirements for Workshop Proposals (3 hour sessions)

Proposals for workshops must include:

1. A one-page outline of the workshop organizer's name/s, workshop title, and a brief description of the workshop's theme and intended audience (maximum 500 words)
2. A one-page short CV with current contact information for each of the workshop's organizer/s, including the organizer's current contact information (maximum 300 words each)

The workshop organizer should combine these two elements into one pdf file with numbered pages. Please name this file with your last name and the words "workshop proposal," e.g., "smith_workshop_proposal.pdf ".

Submission Requirements for Mixed Discipline Session Proposals (2 or 3 speakers)

Proposals are also called for mixed discipline sessions, in which natural scientists dialogue with social scientists and/or humanities scholars, focusing on controversial issues relating to emerging developments in science, technology and the environment. The topics that could potentially be covered are open, but some suggested themes might be: the surveillance state, big data and privacy, regulation of GMOs and nanotechnology, developments in synthetic biology, climate change modeling and policy-making, the origins of indigenous people in Australia and New Zealand, etc.

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE

The 2019 AAHPSSS conference will take place between Wednesday 13 and Friday 15 November at the Kelburn Campus of Victoria University Wellington, primarily in the Te Toki a Rata and Alan McDiarmid buildings. Further information about the conference venue and the city and surrounds of Wellington will be posted on the AAHPSSS website closer to the conference.

Depending on levels of interest, we are examining the feasibility of holding additional workshops separate from the conference on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November. Further information with regard to these workshop proposals will be advised when it comes to hand, but if you would be interested in attending or developing one of these workshops, please contact a member of the AAHPSSS Executive or Wellington Conference Committee.
